Undergraduate courses
Modern Database Systems
A core course for Computer Science and Technology undergraduates at Wuhan University. The emphasis shifts from database applications to database development. Starting with fundamental concepts and principles, the course examines internal implementation techniques and prepares students for Database System Implementation. Topics include relational theory and architecture, NoSQL and NewSQL, distributed and cloud-native databases, and AI+DB, combining academic research with industry practice. 68 contact hours, including 12 laboratory hours.
Database System Implementation
A core course for senior Computer Science and Technology undergraduates, currently offered in the summer term of the third year. Students implement database functionality in lightweight open-source DBMS frameworks such as MiniOB and RMDB, building on Modern Database Systems. Topics include storage engines, query compilation and optimization, transaction management, and concurrency control. Lectures, implementation work, and discussion connect database design principles with engineering practice. 60 contact hours.
Database Systems
A core course for Software Engineering and Artificial Intelligence undergraduates. It covers the problems addressed by database technology, fundamental principles, internal architecture and implementation, application design and development, and emerging data management challenges. Students learn to manage and tune databases, use modeling tools at different abstraction levels to design large databases, and develop database applications while exploring database internals. 52 contact hours, including 12 laboratory hours.
Graduate courses
Database Kernel Technologies
An advanced course on database architecture and implementation. Topics include storage engines (LSM-tree and B+ tree indexes), query optimizers, transaction processing and ACID properties, concurrency control (MVCC and locking), and recovery (WAL and checkpoints). Theoretical analysis and source-code practice develop both conceptual understanding and implementation skills. 48 contact hours.
Engineering Ethics
A required course for professional engineering graduate students at Wuhan University. It develops ethical awareness, professional integrity, and social responsibility through engineering responsibility, risk, safety, environmental issues, and data and AI ethics. Case studies, discussions, and presentations teach ethical analysis and decision-making in complex engineering contexts. 32 contact hours.
Interdisciplinary AI Innovation Practice
A project-based course for professional master’s students in computing. Students integrate AI with their own research or engineering needs and design an application with practical value. The complete development process spans topic justification, requirements analysis, solution design, implementation, and presentation, strengthening engineering, project organization, communication, and innovation skills. 32 contact hours.
